HEGEMONI BAHASA DAN KARUT MARUT WAJAH RUANG PUBLIK (SELAYANG PANDANG WAJAH BAHASA RUANG PUBLIK DI JAWA TIMUR)

Abstract

The problem of language hegemony is closely related to language used by society. Foreign languages have dominated and forced society to like and use them. The dominant of foreign languages leads Indonesian language as national language get decreased in using it. The power of leaders toward language is using the term “car free day.” The central government and local government prefer to use foreign language in public places. Even though the term “car free day” has been translated well into hari bebas kendaraan. This paper investigated how is language in public area in east Java right now? And this paper also tried to find out how the government plays role in monitoring the language. Language is the mirror of how the people apply and respect it as the national identity. To improve the positive attitude in public places as written in constitution No. 24 2009 on flag, language and national symbol and also national anthem.
