Abstract

The Literature as a social institution could delivering messages of text or images utilizes all its presentations on the object’s figure. The meaning of Shino’s identity in the Yometa no Hanashi story proceed with the ideas, values and norms that are arranged and constructed to provide an identity that represents the Japanese. Through the concept of representation, this research express the ideology of Japanese identity which is arranged through the story of Shino in Yometa no Hanashi. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The data source was quotation of stories about the character Shino in the Yometa no Hanashi. The collecting data methods is documentation. After the data is obtained, then analyzed by describing it systematically and carefully according to the concept. The result of this research was that character development described through various dimensions on the Shino, has meaning related to the goals of the author desire to construct the Japanese society. Specifically, construct the meaning of religious values, discipline, and working enthusiasm which is recognized by Japanese today. The identity of Shino can represent an attitude especially for Japanese in seeing themselves or the others outside Japan.
