Abstract

Water resource availability plays a crucial role in supporting sustainable regional development, particularly in rapidly growing areas such as Labuan Bajo, Komodo District, West Manggarai Regency, Indonesia. Land use changes driven by increasing development activities may influence the capacity of groundwater recharge areas. Therefore, this study aims to map and analyze groundwater recharge areas as a basis for sustainable water resource management. The research method employed a spatial analysis approach using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) through an overlay technique of several parameters influencing infiltration capacity, namely land use, slope, soil texture, and rainfall. Each parameter was assigned specific weights and scores to produce a classification of groundwater recharge areas into five categories: very high, high, moderate, low, and very low. The results indicate that the study area is still dominated by very high and high recharge classes, suggesting that the natural hydrological function of the region remains relatively well preserved. However, a comparative analysis between 2017 and 2024 reveals a tendency of declining recharge capacity in certain areas, characterized by a decrease in high recharge areas and an increase in moderate and low categories. These changes are associated with land use dynamics, particularly the expansion of settlement areas and intensified development activities in Labuan Bajo. Therefore, the groundwater recharge map produced in this study provides essential information to support spatial planning, water resource management, and conservation strategies aimed at maintaining the sustainability of the regional hydrological system in the future.
