Abstract

The thesis writer focuses on Hannah Baker’s defense mechanism as seen in Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why. The objectives of the study are to find out the portrayal of Hannah Baker’s defense mechanism, the causal factor, and the effect in Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons why. The thesis writer applies the theory of defense mechanism and concept of defense mechanism and conducts a qualitative research. The finding shows that there are eleven portrayal of Hannah Baker’s defense mechanism and it is divided into three portrayal for projection, two portrayal for displacement, three portrayal for denial, one proof for reaction formation, one proof for sublimation, and one proof for turning against self. Besides, the thesis writer also concludes that there are two causal factors of Hannah Baker’s defense mechanism that are: neurotic anxiety causal factor, and stress causal factor. While both of them, the thesis writer also conclude that there are effects of Hannah Baker’s defense mechanism on herself and on Clay Jensen.
