Illocutionary Acts Found in an Interview with Jack Ma on Youtube Entitled We Never Give Up
Abstract
Speech act is a phenomenon that could be found in debates, dialogue, speech, and interviews. Some interviews are conducted for gathering information from very important persons to know about their lives, ideas, etc. This study is a pragmatic-based area study that has the objectives to identify the types of illocutionary acts and to find the aim of each type of illocutionary acts. The thesis writer used Searle (1979) theory about illocutionary acts and uses descriptive qualitative research design. The writer took the data on YouTube by downloading the video from English Speeches Youtube official channel. In this study, four types of illocutionary acts are found; assertives, directives, commissives, expressives. The thesis writer found around 43 utterances that contain types of illocutionary acts in this study. Assertive is the most dominant type of illocutionary acts, and then followed by directives, expressive, and commissives.
