Homophobia in Prayers for Bobby Movie Script through Mary Griffith

The researcher focuses on Mary Griffith’s character as homophobia person when she knows Bobby’s secret from Bobby’s brother. Later, she also realizes homophobia to all homosexual. This article has purpose to answer the question of “why does Mary Griffith have homophobic understanding towards Bobby Griffith in Prayers for Bobby Movie Script? Through qualitative method and close reading technique, the dialogues uttered by Mary Griffiths regarding homophobia. The classifications are based on the indicators of pathological dread of the same-sex love, the discriminations built into a culture’s laws, and customs against homosexual based on patriarchal system. The reasons of Mary’s homophobia are Biblical Verses and Religious Understandings, Social and Psychological Justifications against Homosexuality, and Blaming Action Related to Homosexual Indications. In conclusion, Mary tends to be homophobic since she knows that it is not natural at all. Therefore, she keeps quoting Biblical verses, justifying her actions, and blaming others to keep her family out of homosexual issues.
