Exploration of the Existence of Javanese Primbon Through the Petung Kelangan Tradition in the Banjarejo Village Community, Ngantang District, Malang Regency

Abstract

This study examines the existence of Javanese Primbon in the Petung Kelangan Tradition in Banjarejo Village, Ngantang District, which functions as a practice of searching for lost items through a spiritual approach. This tradition, which is rooted in Javanese culture, shows a combination of beliefs and cultural values in people's lives, which have been passed down from generation to generation as a form of local wisdom. Various moral values and cognition systems are expressed in this practice, which reflects the relationship between humans and culture, as well as their influence on the social environment. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method using a field research approach. This type of research is field research. John W. Creswell (2014) defines field research as a qualitative research approach that involves collecting data directly from the natural environment where the phenomenon being studied occurs. The data used in this study is primary data obtained from the Banjarejo village community through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that Petung Kelangan still has an important role in the lives of the Banjarejo Village community, especially in decision making, maintaining social harmony, and preserving culture. Community understanding of this tradition varies. The main function of Petung Kelangan is as a guide in determining good days for various activities, strengthening ancestral values, and maintaining social relations. Its influence on the community's perspective is dual: on the one hand it provides peace and order in life, but on the other hand it can cause dependency and differences of opinion between generations.
