Comparison of Gender Relations in the Short Story Pengantin by K. Usman with the Short Story Ini Tentang Aku by Putu Ayub

This study aims to describe the gender relations of the short stories Pengantin by K. Usman and Ini Tentang Aku by Putu Ayub, focusing on gender inequality found in both short stories. The short story Pengantin describes complex gender relations, especially society's perception of women, widows, and poor families. Inequality is seen in the assumption that men are more capable of raising the dignity of the family, while women are often the object of accusations. In contrast, the short story Ini Tentang Aku discusses social pressure on unmarried women at a mature age and the greater burden of shame on women in the annulment of marriage. Through a qualitative descriptive approach, this study found that the short story Pengantin presents more complex gender issues than the short story Ini Tentang Aku, although both voice the reality of gender inequality. The results of this study can enrich the understanding of gender depictions in literature and their relevance to social dynamics in society.
