Abstract

The emergence of language sounds is caused by the needs of speakers in a certain place and
social conditions, along with influencing factors such as geographical location, social groups, levels
of formality, and the passage of time. These factors can differentiate language use. Regional
languages are used as a means of connection among community members and lead to variations in
language. This research aims to describe the forms of vowel and consonant changes in the Rantau
Pandan District of Bungo Regency, Jambi Province. This type of research is qualitative with a
descriptive method. The research data consists of vocabulary used by the people of Rantau Pandan
District. The subject of this research is the language used in communication in Rantau Pandan
District. Data collection in this study was conducted using observation and conversational methods
(interviews) which involve dialogue between the researcher and selected informants. The data
collection techniques used in this study include interview techniques, recording techniques, and notetaking techniques. Data analysis in this study is carried out with the following steps: (1) transcribing
the recorded and noted data, (2) categorizing words based on differences in vowels and consonants,
(3) analyzing the phonology of Rantau Pandan, and (4) concluding the results of the data analysis.
Based on the analysis of the Rantau Pandan dialect data, it can be concluded that phonetic changes in
the form of vowel shifts are a prominent characteristic of this dialect. Although various vowel sound
changes occur, such as from /i/ to /ɛ/ or /e/, from /u/ to /o/, and from /a/ to /e/, these changes do not
cause shifts in word meanings. This means that the phonetic variations occurring in the Rantau
Pandan dialect are non-phonemic and more reflect the articulatory tendencies characteristic of its
speakers. Keywords: Phonology, Allophony, Vowel and Consonant Changes.
