Abstract

The practice of oral traditions as part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage is now gradually being forgotten, even though it should be preserved for future generations. One such tradition is the Ngayun ceremony, a ritual performed by the Sundanese community as part of the procession to welcome the birth of a baby. This study aims to describe the form, meaning, and function of mantra in the Ngayun traditional ceremony among the Sundanese people in Gandoang Village, Bogor Regency. The research method used is qualitative with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, as well as listening and note-taking techniques. The data analysis steps include data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal four types of mantra: handwashing mantra, stepping on money/first contact with the ground, pre-swinging mantra, and laying the baby in the swing. Analysis of the text, cotext, and context shows that the mantra contains physical and spiritual elements reflecting religious, social, and personal meanings. The functions of the mantra include projecting communal hopes, legitimizing cultural institutions, serving as a medium for value education, and acting as a tool for social control, in line with Danandjaja's theory.
