Abstract
Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) disease is a significant threat to the common carp culture industry,
including in the Kampar region of Riau, which has great potential in the fisheries sector in
Indonesia. KHV infection can occur horizontally and has a mortality rate of up to 100%. Although
it is known that KHV can cause high mortality rates, early detection and prevention of this disease
is still a challenge in the field. This study aimed to detect KHV by molecular method (PCR) in
common carp cultured in the Kampar region, Riau. The technique used was molecular, namely
conventional PCR. The results showed that KHV-positive carp showed symptoms of swimming
to the surface and being weak, solitary, having no appetite, excessive mucus production,
hemorrhage on the body and fins, discoloration, and whitish gills. The internal organs, the kidneys,
liver, spleen, and heart, looked pale. PCR examination results showed 3 (three) KHV-positive
samples with the appearance of a band at 409 bp, so the prevalence of KHV was 100%. From
the results of this study, recommendations that can be taken include using healthy fish from
disease-free sources, implementing biosecurity and quarantine, reducing stocking density, and
monitoring and surveillance of KHV need to be carried out continuously in common carp
aquaculture; it is necessary for early detection and determining actions to be taken quickly if KHV
is detected in an aquaculture unit
