Abstract

Anxiety is a subconscious conflict between id (libido and emotion) and the defense of ego and superego, which forces ego to form an defense mechanism. This is termed by Freud as an subconscious mechanism that is done to overcome or protect individuals from anxiety. Tsuchigami in Kenji Miyazawa’s short story Tsuchigami to Kitsune experienced anxieties that culminated in his efforts to maintain his psyche. Using the psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud, especially in the structure of personality and ego defense mechanisms, results show that the ego defense mechanism most often used by Tsuchigami is rationalization defense mechanism.
