Abstract

The research focuses on finding the process of Emil Sinclair’s individuation as seen in Hermann Hesse’s Demian. The research method that is used is qualitative research using the narration and dialogue in the novel Demian as the source of data. The finding shows that Sinclair goes through three stages of individuation; 1) containment/nurturance stage, 2) adapting/adjusting stage, and 3) centring/integrating stage. He starts with forming his persona, then drops to shadow, then he finds his anima and animus, it brings him to develop his self, and then lastly his ego leads him to project a persona as a good citizen that goes along with his role in the society.
