Abstract

Higher education in Indonesia faces the challenge of low reading literacy skills among students, especially in the field of tourism. This study aims to explore the perceptions of tourism students towards reading literacy at the Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta Tourism College. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey design. Data was collected through questionnaires distributed to 103 tourism students. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics. The results showed that students' perceptions of the importance of reading literacy were very positive, with an average score of 4.52. However, students' interest in and reading habits were still relatively low, with an average score of 3.36 to 3.83. Challenges in understanding academic texts were also identified, with almost 50% of students experiencing difficulties. The teaching method applied had a positive influence on students' reading literacy. Reading literacy plays an important role in improving students' understanding and academic achievement. Although students are aware of the importance of reading literacy, low interest and reading habits are challenges that need to be overcome. More effective teaching strategies are needed to improve reading literacy among tourism students.
