Abstract
This study investigates the effect of varying bait weights on the catch performance of the mantis shrimp (Lysiosquillina maculata) using trap fishing gear in Bolok Waters, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The research employed an experimental fishing method involving two bait weight treatments 10 grams and 20 grams applied to eight fishing trap units, each replicated 17 times. Key parameters observed included total catch, biomass, shrimp length, sex distribution (male and female), number of ovigerous females, and sex ratio. Statistical analyses using independent samples t-test and chi-square test revealed no significant differences (P > 0.05) across all parameters between the two bait treatments. While traps baited with 20 grams exhibited marginally higher average catch rates, the variation was statistically insignificant. Furthermore, the 10-gram bait resulted in more consistent catch outcomes, indicated by lower standard deviation values. These findings suggest that bait weight increment does not substantially influence mantis shrimp capture efficacy. Instead, olfactory stimuli from the bait appear to play a more crucial role than its quantity. Therefore, using lighter bait presents a more cost-effective and sustainable approach for mantis shrimp fishing operations.
