Abstract

Extraordinary School (SLB) Harapan Bunda Surabaya is one of the schools established to educate children with special needs (autism) in East Surabaya. The communication used by teachers in educating their students by using interpersonal communication. This research was conducted with the aim of knowing the interpersonal communication patterns used by teachers in building self confidence for autistic students at SLB Harapan Bunda Surabaya. This study used a qualitative descriptive research method that is to describe how the pattern of interpersonal communication between teachers and autism students through interview, observation and documentation techniques. The results of the study showed that there are three patterns of interpersonal communication used by teachers in educating students with special needs at SLB Harapan Bunda Surabaya. The first was the pattern of primary communication which is shown by the process of conveying information between the teacher and students directly using verbally and non verbally symbols. The second was a secondary communication pattern which is shown by the process of conveying information from the teacher to the students using social media intermediaries via tablets to communicate, and the third was a circular communication pattern by showing a two-way communication process between the teacher and students as well as the feedback occurs both of them. The three communication patterns above can be the basis for developing the self confidence of autistic children at SLB Harapan Bunda Surabaya.
