Abstract

Central Maluku Regency is one of the tuna producing areas with fishery commodities that have high economic value as export products. Tuna fishing in Central Maluku Regency, especially in Haruo Hamlet, still uses simple fishing gear, namely handlines using bait as a lure for fish to approach the hook. This research is expected to provide benefits for fishermen in Haruo Hamlet in increasing catches based on the right type of bait to use. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in catches of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) based on the type of bait used and to find out which type of bait is the most effective. The study was conducted using the experimental fishing method with the Federer formula, the collected data were tested using the t-test. There is a significant difference between artificial flying fish bait and natural squid bait on the catch of yellowfin tuna using handlines. The use of natural squid bait was more effective than the use of artificial flying fish bait for yellowfin tuna catches using handlines, where the catch with natural squid bait was 95 yellowfin tuna, while with artificial flying fish bait, 69 yellowfin tuna were caught. The by-catch was 58 skipjack tuna.
