Abstract

One of the fish farming that is quite promising is the African catfish cultivation. African catfish cultivation is
growing rapidly because it can be cultivated in limited land and water sources with a high stocking density,
cultivation technology is relatively easy to master by the community, marketing is relatively easy and the business
capital required is relatively low (Najiyati, 1992). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of density,
duration of transportation and the combination of density and duration of transportation on the survival rate of
African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fry in closed dry transportation systems. Meanwhile, the aim of the study was
to obtain the best density, duration of transportation and the combination of the two to produce the highest
survival rate of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fry in closed dry transportation systems. This research was
conducted in. CV. Blessings to the Brothers Jalan Tanah Merah Utara 6/20 Surabaya. The time of the study was
carried out for 7 days starting on the 19th to the 26th of January 2012. The research method used is the
experimental method. Surachmad (1990), which uses data collection techniques carried out by direct observation
of the symptoms of the object under study. The research design used was factorial RAL (Completely Randomized
Design) (Kusriningrum, 1990). The treatment in this study consisted of two factors, namely the amount of density
(factor A) which consisted of three levels (50, 100 and 150 fish/bag) with the notation (a1, a2 and a3) and the
length of transportation (factor B) which consisted of three level (10, 12 and 14 hours) with the notation (b1, b2
and b3). The combinations of these treatments were (a1b1), (a1b2), (a1b3), (a2b1), (a2b2), (a2b3), (a3b1),
(a31b2) and (a3b3), each treatment combination was replicated three times, obtained 27 treatment combinations.
The results of the ANOVA test from African catfish seed survival data showed that the fish density treatment had
a significant effect on the survival of African catfish fry, the transportation time treatment had a significant effect
on the survival of African catfish fry and the combination treatment (interaction) of density and duration
transportation did not significantly affect the survival of African catfish fry. The combination (interaction) of
density and duration of transportation that resulted in the highest average survival of African catfish fry was 50
fish / 10 hours, at 80%, while the lowest was 150 fish / 14 hours, at 18.44%.
