Abstract

 

This study aims to examine the types of spelling errors found in crime news headlines published on the online portal lampuhijau.co.id throughout 2024, as well as to explore their utilization as audiovisual learning media for writing news texts at the junior high school level. The research is motivated by the phenomenon of language use in online media that often deviates from standard spelling rules. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with document study techniques for data collection. The data, consisting of 87 news headlines, were analyzed using the guidelines of the Enhanced Indonesian Spelling System (EYD) Edition V, and classified into four categories of errors: letter usage, word writing, punctuation usage, and writing of loanwords.

The results show that all analyzed headlines contained spelling errors. The most frequent errors were found in letter usage (36.8%), followed by word writing (35.6%), punctuation usage (19.5%), and loanword writing (8.0%). These findings indicate a weak application of spelling rules in online journalistic practice. Based on these findings, the researcher developed a video-based learning media using the CapCut application. This media presents comparisons between incorrect headlines and their corrected versions according to spelling rules. This study demonstrates that spelling errors in online media can be educationally utilized as a contextual and practical learning resource in Indonesian language instruction at the junior high school level.
