Abstract
Background: Hormonal changes in women during the transition to menopause may increase emotional sensitivity, making them more vulnerable to anxiety. Safe and easily applicable non-pharmacological interventions are therefore needed. Lavender aromatherapy is known to have relaxing and anxiolytic effects.
Objective: To examine the effect of lavender in inhaler form on anxiety levels among premenopausal women.
Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group approach. Respondents were divided into two groups: an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group received lavender aromatherapy inhalation eight times over four weeks, with a frequency of twice per week, each session lasting 15–20 minutes. Anxiety levels were measured before and after the intervention using a validated instrument. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test.
Results: A reduction in anxiety scores was observed in both groups after the study period. In the intervention group, the mean anxiety score decreased from 19.97 ± 4.08 to 11.07 ± 2.92. In the control group, the mean score decreased from 19.17 ± 4.74 to 9.97 ± 2.44. Statistical analysis showed that the reduction in anxiety scores in both groups was significant (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Lavender in aromatherapy inhaler form has potential to reduce anxiety levels in premenopausal women and may be considered a complementary therapy in promotive and preventive women’s health services at the community level
