Abstract

. Oral tradition plays an important role in preserving local cultural values as it conveys moral, spiritual, and social teachings through spoken expressions, one of which is the use of mantras in the Berokan tradition. The Berokan local culture is a traditional performing art in Indramayu Regency, believed by the community to ward off misfortune, purify oneself, and repel diseases. This study aims to describe the forms, meanings, and functions of mantras within the Berokan tradition among the people of Tambi Village, Sliyeg District, Indramayu Regency. The research employed a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate three types of mantras: the offering mantra, the syahadat bumi (earth testimony) mantra, and the pillow-disposal mantra. Analysis of the text, cotext, and context reveals that the mantras contain both physical and spiritual elements reflecting religious, social, and individual meanings. Furthermore, the functions of the mantras include serving as a projection system of communal hopes, legitimizing cultural institutions, providing moral education, and acting as a means of social control, in accordance with Danandjaja’s theory
