Abstract

Socially, language is used by society to build and maintain social relationships. Culturally, language is used by society to express the culture it creates. Because the culture between one society and another is different, the language used to express it is also different. One language that has gender differences is Japanese. The data studied focuses on types of kandoushi, and categories of kandoushi based on the gender of the speaker. This research aims to describe the form of kandoushi doui used by male speakers and female speakers. The reason for choosing this research is that there has not been much research discussing the use of kandoushi in danseigo and joseigo. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach with the anime data source Dr. Riichiro Inagaki's Stone Season One was released on July 5 2019 and consists of 24 episodes. The data was analyzed using Masuoka and Takubo's theory. A total of 71 doui-type kandoushi data were found with the forms hai (はい), Ee (ええ), Aa (ああ) Un (うん), and Haa (はあ). From this data, it was found that male speakers tend to use kandoushi Aa (ああ) while female speakers tend to use kandoushi Un (うん) when agreeing with what their interlocutor said.
